This minor introduces students to the skills necessary to practice news reporting and writing for multiple platforms. Students learn to think critically, produce creatively, write precisely and interview thoughtfully. Through classwork and experiential learning opportunities, you will learn how to report breaking news, enterprise and feature stories, use social media effectively, and examine the role news media play in a healthy democracy.

"I chose to attend EIU as I had previously worked for The Daily Eastern News during my senior year of high school, and Eastern had the major I wanted (journalism). In addition, I live in Charleston, IL so I was able to save money by going to my local university."Luke BrewerClass of 2028, Journalism major
The journalism minor prepares students for a job in the fast-paced media world, whether it interviewing a local politician, reviewing the latest theatrical performance or telling stories that educate and inform your community. Through hands-on coursework via small classes, live event coverage, and the chance to report for the campus’ only student media outlet, students can build a professional portfolio of bylines while still in school.
