EIU Department of Employment and Examinations

Welcome to Employment and Examinations!

The Office of Employment and Examinations is committed to providing unified professional services to make Eastern Illinois University a better place to work and learn.

Employment positions available at EIU include:

Civil Service

Public universities in the State of Illinois are required to classify professional (non-academic), technical, and support staff according to established civil service categories. All staff jobs, except those determined by the Civil Service Merit Board to be administrative/professional in nature, are classified as civil service. To be considered for Civil Service Positions you must complete and submit an application and pass an examination.

As part of the Civil Service Examination Process, the Statute provides that EIU provide access and the ability to conduct open and continuous testing.  This allows an applicant to schedule a review of their credentials for any classification, regardless of whether a vacancy exists.  After the request, the review process should occur within 15 days.  For this purpose, we allow qualified applicants to request and have their credentials reviewed for any civil service classification bi-weekly.  Open reviews will occur alternating Fridays.

Should a qualified candidate wish to be considered for a classification, regardless of vacancies within the classification, please contact the Examination Office at 217-581-3911.  You will be asked to provide an updated resume, any transcripts or current certificates, and any other information which would be helpful to complete the credentials review.  Please contact us at employment@eiu.edu or by calling the above number for more information regarding open and continuous testing.

Civil service openings are sometimes advertised online; however, you should test for any EIU civil service classification in which you are interested before a vacancy occurs. Read about the hiring process to learn how the hiring system works for Civil Service.

Apply for a Civil Service Position

The Civil Service employment application can be completed online. We encourage candidates to include any additional pertinent information such as a resume or school transcripts.

Regardless of how many civil service positions you are interested in, you only need to complete one application. Once you have submitted your application, please contact us at eiu_employment@eiu.edu or by phone at 581-3911 if you have not heard from us within 30-days. By completing the application online, you will also be able to track your progress through our examination system, including your rank on registers and when you are eligible to take each exam again.

We currently have scores in this system for paper exams only. E-Test scores are not available here.
