EIU Honor Jazz Combo Day
Monday, November 13, 2017
On Monday, November 13 2017, EIU will host its 111th Annual Honor Jazz Combo Day. Talented high school students from across the state will be selected to participate. The day will include rehearsals, private lessons, and opportunities to play and perform with other participants. Our faculty includes Sam Fagaly, saxophone; Andrew Cheetham, trumpet; Jemmie Robertson, trombone; Paul Johnston, piano; Scott Hesse, guitar; Jamie Ryan, drums; and Christian Dillingham, bass. We will be able to accommodate at least two students on each of the following instruments: alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. If an outstanding student who plays another instrument is nominated and selected, we will certainly welcome him or her.
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply. Applications must be received by October 16 and include the following:
- Nomination from director or instructor. Click here to download the nomination form.
- Recording. Students should send a recording (e-mailed submissions are encouraged) to document brief examples of their command of their instrument and jazz improvisation. It need only be three to five minutes in length, and recording quality is of secondary importance. Students may record themselves playing with a play-along track if that is most convenient. All contact information should be included with the recording.
When the selection process has been completed, directors and students who apply will be notified of the results. Those selected will receive further details regarding the event. Please mail or e-mail application materials to the following address:
