General Background Information

What is Haven – Faculty & Staff?

Haven for Faculty & Staff addresses the dual role of responding and preventing acts of sexual violence in students’ lives and their own and provides clarity on reporting responsibilities. Content is presented in a way that recognizes the unique role of employees as responders to disclosures, mandated reporters, campus leaders, and bystanders. Furthermore, the course was built in partnership with members of the VAWA negotiated rule making committee–those involved in the development of the legislative guidance.

The modules provide interactive skill-building opportunities to practice how to handle a number of situations with both students and other Faculty & Staff members.

For example:

A graduate student seemingly about to disclose an incident to a mandated reporter

A colleague appearing to be in an abusive relationship

A professor making uncomfortable comments to a graduate student

Faculty & Staff can champion prevention efforts and model the behaviors for our campus. Education on these issues will protect individuals in their own lives, identify ways to be in support of student survivors, and provide empowerment to help create change on campus.

What can faculty & staff expect?

Haven Part One will take approximately 1 hour.  Faculty & staff will be notified 30 days after completion of Part One to complete Part Two.  Part Two will take approximately 15 minutes.

Why is EIU requiring faculty & staff to complete Haven?

Sexual Assault is a key health issue on all college campuses. Part of creating a healthy community is providing campus-wide approaches to health and using tools such as Haven.  Eastern Illinois University takes its responsibility to ensure student health and safety seriously – we want to work together with faculty and staff to create the healthiest campus possible. Eastern Illinois University is committed to providing an academic environment where everyone can live, study, work and have fun safely.  By requiring individuals to complete this training Eastern Illinois University is meeting the mandatory requirement per the Illinois statue of the Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act.

Additional Questions

Who will see survey answers? How is the data kept?

Haven for Faculty & Staff includes surveys that offer faculty and staff feedback on their sexual assault-related attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are strictly confidential; Eastern Illinois University will only receive information about the population as a whole and will NEVER see any individual’s answers. Because Eastern requires some faculty and staff to complete the program, Eastern's Haven administrators will only receive information concerning log-in date, current progress in the module, and completion date.
