Why Study Marketing at EIU?

  • No business background required — this minor is explicitly designed for both business and non-business students alike.
  • Choose electives in social media marketing, advertising, sales, or international marketing to shape the minor around what actually interests you.
  • Elective options pull from communication, psychology, and journalism, giving students a well-rounded view of persuasion and consumer behavior beyond a single department.
  • Since marketing activities exist in every kind of organization, what you learn here transfers across industries — private business, nonprofits, and government alike.
  • Courses like Professional Sales and Retail Management build real, usable business skills rather than staying purely theoretical.
"I chose to attend EIU because of the highly decorated business program and the track and field program which I am currently a part of."

Hands-On Experience

  • Students develop and deliver actual sales presentations, applying real oral and written communication skills to determine and satisfy buyer needs.
  • Students analyze real internal and external factors that affect retail decisions — pricing strategy, merchandising, and promotional activities.
  • Coursework examines how and why people actually obtain, use, and dispose of products, grounding theory in real buyer psychology.
  • Courses in advertising, public relations writing, and persuasion let students build a genuinely applied specialty that spans departments, not just marketing theory in isolation.
  • Students choose two electives — at least one with the MAR prefix — letting them build hands-on depth in a specific area like social media marketing or sales management.
