Broadcast Meteorology

Few things in this world influence our decision-making like the weather, and in this minor you will learn how to predict it, and communicate that forecast to a variety of audiences on television, radio, streaming, social media, and other video platforms. This interdisciplinary minor prepares students to understand the science of weather prediction and then effectively use media to communicate that information to an audience.

Why Study Broadcast Meteorology at EIU?

  • The Broadcast Meteorology minor at EIU has a proven track record of success as our alumni are working on television and in media all across the United States.
  • You will learn how to actually broadcast your weather forecasts in our professional television studio with a dedicated space for meteorology. Additionally, you will learn the on and off-camera production skills to be successful working in television, radio, and on any video platform.
  • You will learn the science behind weather prediction, so you are not merely communicating it, you are predicting, explaining, and helping to keep people safe in severe weather.
  • Part of the program is a hands-on practicum where you will receive one-on-one feedback from a meteorologist.
"During my senior year of high school, I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to intern at WEIU News Watch. From that experience I fell in love with meteorology and later decided to pursue broadcast meteorology as one of my minors. The Department of Geosciences has helped me develop my love for weather as well as sparked my interest in many other fields."
