EIU SAFETY & PREPAREDNESS

safe charleston

Safe and sound. Charleston, IL was rated the second safest college town in the U.S. in 2017. The University Police Department is committed to thorough patrol and enforcement to provide a safe and comfortable campus climate where education can be of top priority. The following proactive measures can be taken to increase preparedness and ensure student safety.

 eiu secure

Stay SecureOn campus residents are encouraged to lock their doors when leaving, napping, and going to bed for the night; and avoid lending friends/acquaintances keys to access residence halls, floors, and elevators. Students living off campus should always lock their doors at night and when leaving the house/apartment. Avoid traveling alone at night and walk on well-lit and regularly traveled paths.

aware

Be aware. Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and recognize any potential vulnerability. Keep in mind the blue emergency phones located throughout campus to aid you in the case of perceived threat/emergency. Sign up for EIU Alert text messages and emails - a system that notifies the subscriber (student, parent, guardian, faculty/staff) of any possible or active threats on campus or the surrounding area and advises any action that should be taken to ensure safety.

report

Report Incidents. All emergencies can be reported to the University Police Department by dialing 911 or by using any campus emergency phone. All suspicious persons, vehicles, activities, and any accidents or hazardous conditions should also be reported to UPD as quickly as possible.
