New Hire Cadets

Eastern Illinois University, in order to maintain a more dynamic candidate list, will be offering open testing for the Knowledge portion of the Police Officer examination. The Police Officer Physical Fitness Testing and Oral Board Interviews will be scheduled as needed to update our available applicant list. The Physical Fitness Testing will be posted when it is available. Candidates that have completed the Knowledge examination will also be notified by email.

Requirements

  • Must pass a knowledge test administered at Eastern Illinois University Human Resources Department.
  • Must pass the Physical Fitness testing which is scheduled and administered collaboratively by Human Resources and University Police Department. Then a candidate is scheduled for an Oral Board Interview.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Have no record of conviction of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Be eligible for bonding.
  • Be at least 21 years of age upon employment.
  • Successfully complete a psychological examination, medical examination and drug test.
  • Be able to complete the Basic Law Enforcement Officers Training Course (University Police Dept. will register new hire for the training course).

Police Officers at EIU safeguard lives and property by enforcing applicable laws and regulations and promoting good university/community relations. They work under general supervision of higher-level personnel. The typical duties of a Police Officer include:  patrols assigned post, investigates incidents, makes arrests, investigates violations of State statutes, city and county ordinances and university regulations; conducts investigations as required, submits reports to supervisors, directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic and enforces parking and traffic rules and regulations; investigates and reports unusual conditions that might endanger the public safety; assists other agencies during emergencies.

Police Officer Lateral Transfer

The State University Civil Service System for Illinois now allows Eastern Illinois University to maintain a lateral transfer list for Police Officer positions.  Interested law enforcement officers will be required to submit an application to be considered for this list.  Applicants must be employed as a law enforcement officer from outside of our State Universities and employed at either a municipal law enforcement agency, a county sheriff’s office, Illinois State Police, or a similar municipal public safety department.

Requirements:

  • Be an Illinois resident or agree to become a resident of Illinois within 180 days after following the date of his/her appointment.
  • Demonstrate at least two years of full-time law enforcement work experience. (Required duties assigned must have included: making arrests, enforcing laws, investigating crimes, responding to calls for service, using discretion as part of the assigned duties, and carrying firearms.)
  • Have no more than a two year break in service from the time he/she left a comparable law enforcement agency and the time he/she makes his/her application to Eastern Illinois University HR.
  • Possess certification from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) as a certified full-time police officer. (Or be eligible to be granted a waiver of basic training from ILESTB.)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Be a member in good standing in the police department in which the applicant currently serves or has been separated from with no adverse employment action.
  • Pass a background investigations which may include features such as fingerprinting, police records check, credit check, and inquiries of neighbors, relatives, employers.
  • Successfully complete a screening such as a polygraph, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug screening, as required by the hiring department.
