Samuel W.W. Goodrich living in Charleston, Being duly sworn deposeth and saith that the first I saw was down at Chambers corner where I heard Oliver Sallee say that the soldiers could whip any of the butternuts if that was what they come for if they would just go out side of the Town this was Early in the morning of Monday the 28th of March 1864 in Charleston Coles County Ill. -- the next I heard Elsberry Hanks say that they the butternuts would make them sup sorrow (meaning the soldiers) before we leave town – I saw not more until I heard the fireing I should think about three oclock P.M. of said day I saw Bill Hart fall don’t know who shot him I saw Tom Jeffries fall, I saw one of the soldiers running Round a tree he fell & came away limping I saw a fellow with a Brick bat – this is all I can state of much pertinence to the occasion Except, what my son stated on his dying bed, all the time after he was shot & up to the moment almost of his death he said that Nelson Wells shot him the first time, then John OHair shot him twice - - He was shot in the evening and died next day at 11 oclock A.M. - I saw a great deal of shooting but could not Identify the persons My son was perfectly in his senses till he died Further more this affiant saith not Attest
