Histories

The only known history of Nahum Bigelow was written by his granddaughter, the daughter of Lucy Bigelow and Brigham Young, Susa Young Gates. It was written in 1891 for a Mormon periodical for young adults, The Juvenile Instructor. Although the biography is written by a family member in a romantic writing style, the information is still valuable for its cultural perspective and dates of certain events in his life. An additional biographical sketch was written by Gates about her mother, Lucy Bigelow Young. Although never published in her lifetime, portions of her notes were compiled and published in the Utah Historical Quarterly in 1977. When used in context with the census and Land Office records, these memoirs and biographical sketches can help researchers piece together the major events and experiences in the lives of the family.
