Marcus Hill a resident of Charleston township, Coles County, Ill’s, aged 25 years, after being duly sworn on his oath deposeth and says.  I was in Charleston in said county on Monday the 28th March 1864, on the day if the riot, at the time the fireing commenced I was standing at Millers corner on the North East corner of the Square, and being anxious about my horses which were standing hitched to a locust tree near by, I went and unhitched my horses, and drove them round North of Hersys & Taylor grocery, and before I got out of my wagon, some person spoke to me and on looking round saw John Gilbriath Jrnr, and he Gilbriath said to me, Hill what in the Hell do you think of this, I remarked that I thought it was pretty damnd war times, Gilbriath then left me and started East along the alley, the firing was about over when he left me, the firing was going on when he cam to me.
