Don't leave home without your architectural style and grammar book(s)!

These are NOT "humped protrusions!"
There are many architectural books available--and no two are alike, which is the problem. There is no set terminology for some things. The best solution is to bring in your survey forms for Dr. Small to look at in class.
However, McAlester's offers a nice classification system that helps one figure out what they are looking at. (For example, "if you see this type of window, it could be these styles...")
The many faces of Virginia and Lee McAlester's A Field Guide to American Houses, (1984).


Another good book is John J. G. Bluemnson's Identifying American Architecture.
