carriage hosue

The carriage house is located in the back of the house in the northeast corner of the property.  It is a wooden one-and-a-half story building.  Unfortunately, the carriage house has had alterations over time.  It has lost its historical integrity.

The Dudley family had a horse and a buggy.  The horse's name is Rusty.  It was important because Dr. Dudley made house calls to people both in town and in the country.  Tilford and his sisters sometimes went with Dr. Dudley to visit his patients in the country.  Dr. Dudley felt that it was a chance to be with the children.  He also wanted the children to meet different people and learn about the world.

The horse and buggy was also used as transportation in bad weather to go to the farm in Ashmore where Dr. Dudley was born in 1875.  Dr. Dudley took his family to the farm on Sunday afternoons.

After Rusty died, Dr. Dudley purchased a Ford.  He was one of the first people in Charleston to own a car.  With the arrival of the car, the carriage house was converted to a garage.
