Eastern Illinois University hosts many honors societies, academic organizations, and student professional groups, covering many specific disciplines as well as ones that are overarching and open to members from many disciplines.
We encourage you to get involved in an honors society within your major as well as one, or more, of the overarching societies. Membership in one of these societies may help your entry in civil service and other positions within the federal government. To find the right Honorary society, look at your department's website, or review the list of registered student organizations (you can filter the list by organization type).
If you aren't sure whether an Honorary society that has contacted you is legitimate, check the EIU RSO website above to see whether it has a recognized local chapter. You can also see whether the society is affiliated with the Association of College Honorary Societies. This advice is for informational purposes only, and is not intended as an endorsement or objection to any particular Honorary Society. When in doubt, talk with a faculty member in the field who can advise, or come and chat with the Honors College staff.
