New Graduate Student Orientation

We want you to find the resources you need to succeed in your graduate studies at EIU. The brief orientation below should point you in the right direction.

Health and Wellness

We want you healthy, body and soul, and we have the resources to help you achieve that balance.

  1. The Health & Counseling Services, Medical Clinic, has a mission to provide medical services and health education programs which enhance the ability of students to participate fully in intellectual and personal growth opportunities afforded by the university. Check out the many services offered at the medical clinic.
  2. The Counseling Clinic helps to enhance psychological/emotional health, as well as promote the overall wellness of the campus student community through education, outreach, counseling services, consultation, and crisis services. Go to their website for more information and to schedule a visit.
  3. The Student Rec Center offers cardio machines, free weights, and lifting machines, an Olympic size swimming pool, racquetball courts, exercise and medicine balls. Additionally, the Rec provides an array of aerobics and toning classes, including abs, pilates, yoga, kickboxing, and personal trainers available to help set up the perfect workout.You can check them out here.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Find the experts to assist you with all things financial.

  1. The Financial Aid Office can assist with questions about loans, scholarships, veterans' services, and financial wellness. Check out the services offered.
  2. The Graduate School has a number of awards and scholarships available to graduate students. Go here for a listing.

Academic and Research Support

We have everything you need for academic success.

  1. Booth Library offers workshops throughout the academic year to assist with thesis and academic research. Follow them or the Graduate School on social media to see announcements of these workshops. Find information here.
  2. The Office of Accessibility and Accommodations is committed to facilitating the provision of equal access and opportunity to all campus programs and services for students with disabilities. For information specific to graduate students go here.
  3. The Writing Center supports graduate student writers from all programs at any stage of the writing process.You can check them out here.

Campus involvement

EIU's graduate students are active on campus, here are a few RSO's for you to consider.

  1. The Graduate Student Advisory Council is the representative body of the graduate student population and presents graduate views on issues in a unified manner to the student government, administration, faculty, and staff. GSAC is also involved in discussing, reviewing, and participating in any university decision that has a potential impact on the graduate population. It facilitates fluid communication and continuous dialogue among graduate students, administration, faculty, and staff of EIU. Consider getting involved with GSAC.
  2. The Black Graduate Student Association provides support, mentoring, professional development, and career placement planning. Consider joining the BGSA.
  3. The Association of International Students promotes intellectual, social, and cultural activities, international fellowship, as well as assists the orientation of students from other countries and encourage their participation in various student activities. AIS also works to develop close ties between the host community and the international community.More information about AIS can be found here.

Career Services

Career Services is committed to providing innovative centralized career development and experiential learning services to students and alumni that enrich their academic experiences in order to produce an educated, individually responsible, open-minded and ethical career force for the State of Illinois and the larger global society.
