What constitutes plagiarism and how might we, as educators, respond to it? How do we address ethical failures (e.g., copying a paper off the internet) versus knowledge failures (e.g., having a works cited page but not including in-text citations)? And how do we minimize the possibility that students plagiarize in the first place?  In this session, we will address what constitutes plagiarism in writing and oral communication and offer strategies for proactively addressing these concerns in the classroom to facilitate a nuanced discussion about addressing plagiarism on campus.

Given the widespread use of podcasts in society, asking students to produce their own could be engaging for the students and a unique, authentic assessment of their learning. In this seminar, participants hear from two EIU faculty members currently using podcasts as a learning activity in their courses. They describe how the podcasting assignment is designed, how it is scaffolded into the course, how it is graded, their experiences using it as an individual and group assignment, and answer participant questions. This workshop is for faculty who have considered (or currently are) using podcasts as a learning activity or who want to enhance the learning activities in their in-person or online courses.

As we prepare for the next academic year, many of us reflect on our past practices in an effort to make improvements that would enhance student learning and experiences in our classrooms. For many, the syllabus, that welcome email or the D2L news feed will be your students’ first introduction to our course. Catherine Polydore, Chair and Professor  of Counseling and Higher Education explore how, as academicians, we can have blind spots in our practices that create micro-barriers to our students’ success. In this workshop, Dr. Polydore discusses what it means to be inclusive and equitable, we will learn about inclusive and equitable pedagogy, and what they look like in the syllabus and various assignments.

Jamboard is Google's free tool for collaborative digital whiteboarding. Kim Ervin, Instructional Designer in the Faculty Development and Innovation Center demonstrates how students and instructors can use it to collaborate whether they are in person or online, working at the same time (synchronous) or working at different times (asynchronous). This session overviews learning activities using the tool, introduces participants to the Jamboard Kiosk in the Center for Student Innovation (CSI) of Booth Library, and how to use a Jamboard in a traditional classroom.

In this webinar, Ryan Miller, Turnitin Training Consultant, demonstrated how Feedback Studio can be used for similarity checking, feedback, and grading and is proven to deter plagiarism. Ryan demonstrated how instructors can use Turnitin Feedback Studio in D2L at EIU. Topics included How to create Turnitin Assignments in D2L, How a student submits an assignment, How to view the and interpret the Similarity report, and How to navigate the Similarity report.

Note:  In this webinar the presenter indicated that by default, papers submitted to Turnitin are not stored in the standard paper repository but that is incorrect for our instance of Turnitin in D2L. The papers are submitted to the standard paper repository by default.  If you do not want the papers submitted to the repository (such as for a draft), you must change the Turnitin setting in that assignment dropbox to "Do not store submitted papers."

For example, instructors can use third-party or instructor-produced podcasts to deliver course content and students can produce podcasts as a way to demonstrate learning. This session overviews considerations to take into account when teaching with podcasts and introduce participants to the podcasting studio located in the Center for Student Innovation (CSI) of Booth Library.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to teaching and learning to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities. Often, instructors are asked to make important accommodations for students with exceptionalities such as captioning videos or using alternative text for images in online course designs. However, these efforts are not just for students with accommodations, they are principles that impact and enhance outcomes for ALL learners across course modalities. Dr. April Jackson, the Director of Student Disability Services at EIU presented this webinar on the basics of UDL and how instructors can incorporate these principles for all students.

Dr. Lu Ding, Dr. Linda Ghent, and Dr. Jim Bruehler presented on Perusall, a social annotation tool that can be easily embedded in D2L Brightspace. Many faculty use it to replace asynchronous online discussions, and many of them use it before the class and bring in any topics that need to be further addressed in face-to-face meetings. Faculty have reported that Perusall has substantially increased student engagement in online discussions and students have also shown higher interest in participating in Perusall online discussions than traditional D2L online discussions. In this workshop, Dr. Bruehler and Dr. Ghent showcased some of the innovative ways that they used Perusall in their classes. In addition, Dr. Ding presented some pedagogies of how to use Perusall in a class including how to prepare students and how to familiarize students with Perusall.
