FDIC Online Learning Community (OLC)

Facilitator: Julie Lockett, Director of Learning Innovation, Faculty Development and Innovation Center

Location: Online

The OLC is an online community in which we share information and ideas about online teaching and learning throughout the year in an asynchronous group chat, and we meet virtually once a month. Even if you are unable to attend the meetings, we encourage you to join the community to receive the information and participate in the asynchronous discussion.

Would you like to see how others are using D2L Brightspace and other instructional technologies to create innovative online learning experiences? Would you like to be one of the first to learn about new instructional technologies and updates to existing technologies? What about sharing campus best practices to improve online teaching and learning? The FDIC invites all EIU faculty and staff interested in online teaching and learning to join the EIU Online Learning Community (OLC). The purpose of the EIU OLC is to:

  • Share campus best practices to improve online teaching and learning.
  • Explore innovative pedagogical approaches from community members.
  • See how others are using D2L Brightspace and other instructional technologies to create innovative learning experiences.
  • Inform the community about existing and new web-based instructional technologies including what is new in D2L Brightspace.
  • Leverage expertise, experience, and training resources for D2L Brightspace and other instructional technologies across campus.

On August 10, we will meet virtually for the OLC kickoff meeting for Academic Year 2024 as we prepare for the new school year. An agenda as well as a meeting link and more information will be provided for all registrants prior to the meeting. Even if you are unable to attend the OLC meeting, we encourage you to join the community so you will have access to the information shared. The meetings will be recorded for community members unable to attend.

Lunch and Learn: Authentic Assessment in the Age of AI

Facilitator: Dr. Michael Gillespie, Director of the Faculty Development and Innovation Center

Location: 1220 Booth (CSI Active Learning Classroom)

The recent release of Chat GPT and other AI tools have prompted instructors to understand their capabilities and limitations. Past experiences with innovative technologies like calculators and smartphones have shown us that initial worries about how the technologies will help students cheat or detract from learning can give way to innovative approaches for higher education! What if we can use this moment as an opportunity to refocus our attention on different activities and assessments will have the most value to our students?

There are many ways to promote and assess student learning that are not easily replicated by AI, and some that utilize its capabilities. Students will be entering careers where they will have to navigate and critically evaluate evolving sources of information and novel technologies to solve complex problems. Authentic assessments do just this – learning in real-world contexts.

This lunch and learn session will focus on approached to authentic assessments, including how AI tools can aid in developing such learning activities.
