Quantitative Reasoning Workshop |
Quantitative reasoning (QR) is a very important and often overlooked undergraduate university learning goal at EIU. In AY 2018 nearly half of the departmental assessment plans at EIU did not include a QR learning goal. In addition, national assessment data suggests that EIU freshmen and seniors have significantly less QR skills than do their peers at other universities. This workshop is designed to encourage more departments to focus on the quantitative reasoning learning goal and to incorporate it in their classes. We will highlight the resources that are available to faculty and focus on best practices for instruction in teaching QR skills. This workshop will include examples of lesson plans, in-class assignments, and participation in a group activity.

Celestial Suite |
This program is held in conjunction with Booth Library's spring exhibit, "On the Shoulders of Giants: The Moon and Beyond." For more information on the exhibit and programming series, visit https://library.eiu.edu/exhibits/space, and find Booth Library on Facebook and Twitter.
March 27, 2 p.m., “Celestial Suite,” presented by EIU Faculty Brass Quintet, Booth Library Atrium.
The Celestial Suite reflects upon and comments on the relationship between astronomy and sacred music. It is a piece in five movements, with each movement highlighting one of five astronomers/physicists, and each being represented by a member of the brass quintet:
Copernicus – Trumpet (Dr. Jenny Brown, Assistant Professor of Trumpet)
Galileo – French Horn (Dr. Jessica Pearce, Adjunct Professor of Horn)
Newton – Tuba (Dr. Evan Kelsick, Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium)
Hubble – Trombone (Dr. Will Porter, Instructor of Trombone)
Hawking – Trumpet (Keven Lewis, Invited Guest Artist)Each movement relates, for the most part, to the sacred music of the individual’s time period in history. For the most part, this collection of individuals is more a look back at the history of space exploration. However, the final movement does leave us pondering the question of how and why we are here, which ends the piece in the present and looking toward the future.
In between each movement, the performer who is about to be featured will introduce their movement by speaking about the astronomer/physicist represented, sacred music of that time, and how this is explored in the music.

The 2019 Television, Radio and Video Job Fair at EIU |
Representatives from 18 different television, radio, and video production companies will look to connect EIU students with media careers and internships on March 28 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the University Ballroom in the EIU Union.
The annual Television, Radio and Video Job Fair provides a rare opportunity for media students to interact with employers actively seeking content creators and crew for video / programming / audiovisual material, on-air talent, and promotions / sales specialists.
Each year the Television & Video Production B.A., WEIU-TV and FM, and Career Services collaborate to recruit a wide variety of quality media organizations. This year set the record for the number of companies attending.
“The diversity and quality of media companies attending this year's job fair speaks to the quality of student at EIU as well as the reputations of the production, broadcast, and communication degrees,” said Director of the Television & Video Production B.A. and Associate Professor Scott Walus. “We have never seen such a diversity in positions and companies.”
In a two-hour span, students can meet with television, radio and video production companies from all over the state. These media professionals will discuss their companies' current job and internship openings as well as knowledge about how to prepare for a career in the television, radio, and video production industries.
