'Designs of Duty' exhibit |
“Designs of Duty,” an exhibit featuring East Central Illinois veterans and their service-related tattoos, will be on display at Booth Library from Jan. 22 through May 11, 2018.
“Designs of Duty” tells the stories of seven military veterans who served our country over a 45-year period throughout Asia and Europe. Veterans featured in the exhibit reside in Charleston, Newman, Nokomis, Olney, Shelbyville and Towanda.
Tattoos are a common symbol among the military, and this exhibit aims to explore the inspiration and meanings behind them, as well as the stories of the veterans themselves. Pride, patriotism and honor are common themes in the artwork chosen by the veterans showcased in “Designs of Duty.”
Related exhibits on display include military flags; “Symbols of Service,” featuring University of Illinois student veterans; aircraft nose art from World War II to today; Vietnam War helmet graffiti; and literature and poetry during wartime.

Urban Water Conservation |
Urban water conservation is an emerging and multifaceted issue that affects everyone. This talk will highlight some of the issues that are applicable in our area, including water usage, storm water runoff, and water pollution. Some novel solutions will be discussed such as rain gardens, bio-swales, and permeable pavement.

Luisa Igloria: Poetry Reading |
Luisa A. Igloria is the winner of the 2015 Resurgence Prize (UK), the world's first major award for ecopoetry. She is the author of the chapbooks Haori (Tea & Tattered Pages Press, 2017), Check & Balance (Moria Press/Locofo Chaps, 2017), and Bright as Mirrors Left in the Grass (Kudzu House Press eChapbook selection for Spring 2015). Other publications include the full-length works Ode to the Heart Smaller than a Pencil Eraser (Utah State University Press, winner of the 2014 May Swenson Prize), Night Willow (Phoenicia Publishing, 2014), The Saints of Streets (University of Santo Tomas Publishing House, 2013), Juan Luna’s Revolver (University of Notre Dame Press, 2009 Ernest Sandeen Prize), and nine other books.

EIU Student Research and Creative Activity Conference – Friday March 23, 2018
Eastern Illinois University invites all students doing independent research, scholarship, or creative activity in any discipline to share their work at the Student Research and Creative Activity Conference. There will be diverse opportunities for sharing through posters, short presentations, panels, round-tables, performances, and displays of artwork. Students will have the opportunity to hone their skills as presenters and to talk about their work with fellow students, faculty, and staff from across the university. Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to participate.

Deadline to enter Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity |
Eastern Illinois University students who have used Booth Library resources to enhance their research are encouraged to enter the library’s “Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity” program.
The program is open to all Eastern Illinois University students. If campus finances allow, cash prizes of up to $300 will be awarded, in addition to certificates of recognition.
The student entry may be a written work, art piece, exhibit, musical work, documentary, performance or another format.
The 2018 guidelines, application and form can be found on Booth Library’s website at http://library.eiu.edu/awardsforexcellence/. For more information, call 581-6061.
Entries should be delivered to the Administration Office, Room 4700, Booth Library, no later than noon March 23. Recipients will be selected by April 6, and the winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 9-13. Works submitted for competition must have been completed within the last 12 months.
These awards are not intended to duplicate or replace any other standing campus awards. Selected entries will become a part of Booth Library’s Student Research and Creativity Collection.

EIU's annual celebration of student achievement represents the best work of student in all disciplines. The Student Research & Creative Activity Conference will be held this Friday March 24th in Booth Library, Doudna, and Lumpkin Hall. Come out and learn while you support the students who have been preparing their posters, talks, performances and artworks. Lunch will be served in the Library. The event begins in the Booth lobby at 12:30 pm with the announcement of Distinguished Faculty Mentor Research Awards. Research presentations begin at 1 pm.
