SHAPEFILES
Shapefiles are non-proprietary and so are the data format of choice for vector data in QGIS. Let's start by adding a shapefile of Chicago neighborhoods to the map:
1. Click the Add Vector Layer button 
2. Click Browse
3. Set the file filter to ESRI Shapefiles
4. Locate the neighborhoods.shp shapefile in the workshop data folder
5. Click Open
6. The neighborhood data will be added to the map.
In the next section, we'll look at how to add a feature class from an ESRI file geodatabase.
