Assistant Professor of Communications Disorders & Sciences

The Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at Eastern Illinois University is accepting applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The desired start date is August 15, 2024. The department seeks candidates who are committed to student learning, and the academic and clinical instruction of undergraduate and master's students in Speech Language Pathology. Duties include teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels; clinical instruction; research; and service. Mentoring student research is expected.

Qualifications

Doctorate in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field, and current ASHA CCC- SLP credential are required for tenure. Doctoral students who can work full-time at EIU and complete the degree prior to tenure will be considered. Prior clinical supervision of graduate students or CFYs, and/or university teaching experience is preferred. Area of expertise in adult acquired disorders and clinical experience in a medical setting is desirable. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and experience promoting inclusive excellence is required.

Faculty and staff share a common goal of providing students with quality educational experiences and preparation for successful careers. The collaborative and congenial teaching-focused environment leads to outstanding student outcomes. Student Praxis scores are consistently and significantly above state and national averages. Program alumni rate the quality of their professional preparation for internships and employment as very high.

There are 13 academic and clinical faculty in the department involved in classroom teaching and clinical instruction. The department has a rich history of significant and high-level service to ASHA and to the profession. The department has a collaboration with a university and clinic in the Caribbean. The undergraduate program supports an active undergraduate honor's program. The unique STEP program at EIU offers program students rich experiential learning opportunities to work with college-going students with autism. The co-located speech language pathology clinic, classrooms, faculty offices, and graduate assistant offices are conducive to ongoing collaborations and a real sense of community. Research and clinical collaboration possible with local Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital as well as with Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign IL and Terre Haute Regional Hospital, both approximately 60 miles away.
