Math Placement
These guidelines will expire April 30, 2024

Information on the new required
ALEKS math placement will be provided soon.

Eastern offers three avenues for initial math placement. Each of these options are briefly discussed below, while complete information is provided in the Math Placement Guidelines document.

Placement by ACT/SAT Math Score

If you have taken and have on file at Eastern an ACT or SAT math score, then your inital math class placement can be determined by this score.

Placement by High School GPA and Math Course Completed

If you graduated from high school in the past five years, then you can have your transcript evaluated to how the math courses you have taken, grades earned in those courses, and your overall unweighted high school GPA translate into your initial math placement.

Placement by Accuplacer

Math placement testing by Accuplacer is entirely voluntary. A placement test can be authorized by your academic advisor or the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Once authorized, you must coordinate the day and time of the test with Office of Testing and Evaluation Services. Placement test scores are valid for two academic years. Students may take the placement test one time at no cost.

  • Study Materials for the Accuplacer Math Placement Test
Be sure to choose/select study information for the Next-Generation set of tests. These tests include (a) Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics and (b) Advanced Algebra and Functions. The Arithmetic test is only for students needing to test into MAT 1420.
  • Mometrix Study Materials for Accuplacer
These study guides are offered free of charge through Booth Library for all EIU students. Once you are at the site, type 'Accuplacer' in the search bar.

Be sure to downoad the Math Placement Guidelines document for specific details regarding scores and informatiton needed for placemnt into specific classes.
