Approximately 120 undergraduate majors make up our department's student body. The department encourages collaborations with other colleges and universities, industries, and other entities.
Eastern Illinois University started out as a state teachers college, so the roots of the department are based in a culture of excellence in teaching with the emphasis on student learning.
The richness of educational opportunities offered in the department is based upon a long and distinguished tradition of teaching and research. EIU graduates have gone on to make extraordinary contributions as researchers, teachers and intellectual leaders in a variety of fields.

"This academic year marks my 10th anniversary teaching in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science here at Eastern Illinois University. It has not only been rewarding to work with such a supportive group of people, but an honor to be a part of a diverse department that values the experiences and perspectives of both faculty and students. As a legacy alum, I’m proud to say that my education prepared me as a professional educator, and my experience cultivated a love of learning."
"I began working at Eastern in Fall 2013. Although my research is in number theory and Diophantine equations, I enjoy teaching Probability and Statistics. There are so many real world problems that can be described and interpreted if one understands the theory behind it."
"The Math and CS department provides an outstanding learning environment for its students. Not only does the faculty make sure their students are comfortable with and understand the material, but they also ensure their students are developing essential skills for their future, whether that be graduate school or a career."
Jenalee Reardon"Getting a degree in mathematics is a challenging and rewarding experience that requires time and dedication. The department has taught me a lot about being responsible."
DreQuan Green"I would not be who I am and where I am today without the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at EIU. The classes I took and the relationships I built with the professors prepared me for the workforce. I learned how to think critically and to reach out for help on difficult problems. The faculty are always willing to go the extra mile to help students succeed."
Corinne Roth (2019) Data Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)"The advisors and professors in the EIU mathematics department that I worked with care about my development and want me to grow as a teacher and individual. I keep in contact with some of the EIU mathematics department as I look forward to seeing them at professional development opportunities. I recently began working on my masters in the mathematics department and I feel just as welcomed and supported as I did in my undergraduate years."
