Furniture

We want to make sure your living space at Eastern Illinois University feels just like home! To keep everything organized, we kindly ask that all furniture stays put in its designated spot. If you need to make any adjustments, just let us know, and we'll provide connection pins or ladders upon request! Unfortunately, we can't allow blocks or other lifts for bunk legs, or any attachments like contact paper, staples, stickers, hooks, or nails.

Your safety is our top priority, so our Housing staff might need to step in to ensure furniture is set up properly for fire and personal safety. We just want to make sure everyone stays safe and sound!

If you're in a space with stackable furniture, we've got some handy step-by-step instructions for you below. Just a heads up, Pemberton and Stevenson Halls have a different setup, so no stacking there!

Costs for Laundry

The cost of washing and drying is included in the Room and Board Rate for the residence halls, Greek Court and University Court.  Students must still set up the app in order to use the machines.

University Apartments residents will pay to use the washers and dryers.  A payment method is required to set up an account with the app.

  • Washer: $2 per load
  • Dryer: $2 per load

Detergent

The washing machines used are energy efficient and require high-efficiency detergent. The use of non-high efficiency detergent will create wear on our machines and cause them to malfunction. Most major brands will offer high-efficiency detergents, which will be marked with "HE" on the label. There is no extra cost to purchasing high-efficiency detergent.

Sustainability Practices

Some students who live on campus think, "I don’t pay the utility bills so why should I care?" While it is true that you do not get a monthly utility bill, these costs are built into the room and board rates. Each year, Housing estimates how much students may consume based on the previous year’s usage and what the utility rates will be. So what can you do?

The most basic thing you can do is turn your lights off when you leave a room. It may seem like a small thing, but when you multiply it by 2,500 people it really adds up. Many computers have a sleep mode that puts the monitor and CPU into a low power mode. A monitor and computer use 90 percent less energy when they are “asleep”.

Additionally, look for the Energy Star logo when making purchases. It can be found on over 40 different kinds of products such as televisions. Go online to www.energystar.gov for more details.

Lastly, use LED bulbs. They give you more light with less wasted heat and only use about 1/3 of the energy. They can also last up to 10 years which will save you the aggravation of changing bulbs.

Recycling

Another critical way you can assist in taking care of our environment is to participate in your hall’s recycling program. We encourage you to separate your landfill items from your recycling. Your extra effort in sorting these items and minimizing landfill items will make a difference.

Items that are recyclable include paper, aluminum, #1-5, and 7 plastics. Items such as pizza boxes with food or grease on them are considered contaminated and are not recyclable. Styrofoam is also not recyclable.

E-Waste

Disposal of unwanted electronic devices, or e-waste, is not permitted in regular trash bins.

Suggestions

  • Conserve water by doing laundry only when you have a full load. Wash clothes in cold or warm water instead of hot water to reduce energy use even further.
  • Use natural light when available to light your room. It’s FREE.
  • Use task lights (desk lamp) rather than lighting the whole room to a bright level.
  • EIU is a compact campus. Try walking to your next class, and the class after that, and the class after that. Try carpooling if you absolutely need to drive.

Maintenance Issue Wasting Energy?

Submit repair requests (i.e., dripping faucet) at www.eiu.edu/housing/work_order.php.

Have an Idea to Save Energy?

If you have ideas to save energy, contact your hall council or the Housing Office at 217-581-5111.

Kitchen

For students wanting to cook an occasional meal or snack, cooking facilities are available in each hall.

Classrooms

EIU 1111 or University Foundations, is a first-year level class that explains the ins and outs of collegiate life. It is an excellent way to bridge the gap and make the transition from high school to life at a university level. All of these classes are taught in the residence halls and are often taught by housing staff members.
