MSND: Nutrition Education Option

(NDNE)

The MSND: Nutrition Education Option (NDNE) focuses on educating and empowering individuals, families, and communities on making healthier food choices. Those graduate students admitted into this program will take 3-4 semester of graduate coursework either on Eastern's campus in Charleston, Illinois or online.  The student has the option of enrolling in the on campus track or the 100% online track. This option is designed to provide a graduate degree for RDNs, those who wish to not earn the RDN credential, and international students.  The Nutrition Education does not include the Dietetic Internship. 

Certification of Comprehensive Knowledge (CCK)

The CCK policy states that the MSND student must successfully complete a thesis and thesis defense or the systematic review as presented in Research Methodologies in Nutrition and Dietetics (NTR 5600) as determined by this rubric.

Required Courses: 15 semester hours  

NTR 5153 - Nutrition Education Throughout the Life Cycle

NTR 5155 - Principles of Nutrition Education and Behavior

NTR 5156 - Leadership Development in Nutrition and Dietetics 

NTR 5159 - Behavior Modification for Weight Management

NTR 5600 - Research Methodologies in Nutriton and Dietetics

Elective Courses: 21 semester hours

Elective courses are any courses number 4750 or higher in which you have completed the prerequisites or you get permission of the instructor to take.  The courses do not have to be all related to nutrition and dietetics.

Graduate Study Plan Stipulations

  1.  You are limited a maximum of 12 semester hours of coursework taken between 4750 and 4999. 

  2. You must have a minimum of 21 hours of coursework excluding NTR 5950, NTR 5980, and NTR 5990.

  3. You must complete 36 semester hours.

  4. There is no limit to the number of semester hours that you can take online, if you are in the on-campus track.

  5. In consultation with Dr. Lynch, your graduate advisor, draft your graduate study plan and submit for approval by her within the first few weeks of your second semester taking courses. 

  6. Per Graduate School policy, you have six years to complete your degree.
