BVC Bullying Prevention Conference

2015 Bridging Voices in Our Community: Bullying Prevention Conference Registration Page

The BVC team is pleased to announce our 5th Annual Conference and welcome you to our registration page!

The theme for this year's conference is: "A Time For Prevention, A Bridge to Intervention"

The Vice President of Practice from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), Melissa Schlinger, will serve as our keynote speaker.

Melissa Schlinger leads and oversees CASEL’s efforts to advance systemic implementation of evidence-based social and emotional learning in school districts across the nation. She also oversees the development of resources and tools to support these efforts. Before joining CASEL Melissa served as vice president of education services for ScholarCentric, where she worked closely with school district officials, university researchers, educational organizations, and state departments of education to increase awareness of social and emotional learning, SEL research findings, and practical applications for the classroom. She brings extensive experience collaborating with districts to identify needs and to develop sound implementation plans to integrate SEL assessment, curriculum, and instructional strategies into the school environment.

In her career at ScholarCentric and also at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, where she served as vice president of strategic initiatives, Melissa provided guidance on funding initiatives and grants, interpretation and analysis of complex data, and development and execution of consulting and professional development sessions for district leaders, principals, teachers, and parents. She has provided consultation on the importance of social and emotional learning and strategies for effective SEL implementation, and she regularly presents on complex research and education topics to diverse audiences at international conferences and symposiums.

Melissa is a former educator in the Fairfax County, Va., public schools and an active Big Sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters in Chicago, where she resides with her husband and seven-year-old twins.

This year, the conference strands are divided up according to five strands:

  • Strand 1: Social & Emotional Learning at All Levels
  • Strand 2: Support at All Levels
  • Strand 3: Student Engagement and Activities (SEA at all levels) and
  • Strand 4: Administration and The Law/Leading with an Empathetic Heart
  • Strand 5: Community Constituents

In addition to the workshop sessions, we have added undergraduate and graduate research symposium (Poster Presentations) which will be held in the MLK Student Union Ballroom.

Special Presentation of the Play Gidion's Knot by Johanna Adams!

There will also be a special presentation of the play Gidion's Knot at the Doudna Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre at 2:00. The play is written by Johanna Adams and directed by J. Kevin Doolen. Over the course of a 90-minute parent/teacher conference, a grieving mother and an emotionally overwhelmed primary school teacher engage in a fraught conversation about the tragic suicide of Gidion, the mother's son and the teacher's student. Gidion may have been bullied severely - or he might have done the abusing. As his story slowly reveals itself, the women try to reconstruct a satisfying explanation for Gidion's act as well as come to terms with their excruciating feelings of culpability.

Description:

Young children have the capacity to identify their own feelings and the feelings of others.   Providing them the support and opportunities to "bump up against" their peers at a young age is essential to social development.   This session examines what the process looks like with 2-5 year old children.   Everyone can assist children in developing resilience in social situations before they enter public school, and be better prepared to navigate the complex social terrain.   We will look at a "how to" process and examine what we expect to achieve by targeted intervention with young children.

Name: Dr. Heidi Larson, Michele Sinclair, Heather Lee, Sarah Lim, Devin Putnam, Meghan Damler B.I.O.N.I.C. (Believe It Or Not I Care): a mentoring program changing student's lives and the school culture)
Description:

B.I.O.N.I.C. (Believe It Or Not I Care) is a mentoring program which focuses on four critically difficult areas for high school students: entering as a freshman or a transfer student, having an extended illness, and suffering a significant loss.  Counseling graduate students and faculty at Eastern Illinois University partnered with Mattoon High School to implement the B.I.O.N.I.C. program.  This enabled graduate students to get “out of the classroom” and experience counseling work first-hand and an opportunity to create a school culture where every student is cared about. After one year of the program, Mattoon High School experienced an unprecedented drop in freshman absences (with the lowest absence rate for freshman that the school has ever had) as well as the lowest disciplinary record for freshman, and the highest turnout for extracurricular activities.  The program consists of four mentoring teams: the Freshman mentoring team, the Grief team, the Extended Absence team, and the Transfer Team.  The implications of this research are that other schools and counselors would have an effective model for implementing a high-school based mentoring program, and information on what characteristics make an effective mentor including training.
