Italy Study Abroad Program

Led by Dr. Daniele Nardi and Dr. Gary L. Canivez

Overview

This course is a study of the influence of culture on human behavior with two approaches. By being immersed in the rich cultural history of Rome and Tuscania, students will learn the influence of the Roman Empire and of Renaissance on Western civilization. In addition, through readings, lectures, and discussion; students will study the psychological effect of culture on the way people act, think, and feel. The course contains of two modules. The first module covers a basic introduction of cultural psychology with notable examples of cross-cultural differences in behavior. The second module examines aspects of abnormal behavior or psychopathology in the cultural context. Some psychopathologies appear to be more universal, being observed in many cultures and throughout history. Other abnormal behaviors or problems appear to be unique within some cultures. The unifying theme of the course is culture and cultural differences, and this will provide the context for activities and excursions to important cultural sites, and for the observation of similarities/differences between contemporary American and Italian culture (e.g., with respect to food and fashion). What is Multicultural Human Behavior?

It's the study of cultural differences and their influence on how people perceive, think, and feel. If you look at countries across the world you will find remarkably different values and beliefs, which suggest that who we are, how we behave and think, is in part determined by the cultural environment we grow in. There is no better way to study the influence of culture on behavior than in another country! You will be able to observe similarities and differences between American and Italian culture (e.g., food and fashion). At the same time, you will be able to explore the rich artistic and cultural history of Rome, and you will learn the influence of the Roman Empire and of Renaissance on Western civilization.
