EIU Master of Arts in English

The Simple Steps to Becoming EIU

Use the MyEIU system to complete the admission process to join the English MA Program -- which includes applying to complete the Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing.

The MyEIU system will walk you through the process. Anywhere along the way, you can pause and later resume the process.

Listed below are the materials that you will need to supply in order to complete your application. Before you begin, please note:

(1) Applicants to the English MA Program must meet all of the requirements for general admission set forth by the Graduate School including hold a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with 2.75 or higher GPA for full admission.

(2) A GRE score may be submitted but is not required for admission into the program.

If you are an international student, we welcome your interest in our program and will be happy to help in completing the necessary steps to study in the U.S. Before you begin the application process, however, you should visit the Office of International Students & Scholars website and review their policies and services.

Applying for Admission

The MyEIU admission process will walk you through the steps necessary to complete your application file. This process includes (1) applying to the Graduate School and then (2) completing the separate steps for admission into the English MA Program. Note: Meeting the Graduate School requirements does not ensure admission into the English MA Program.

If you have any questions along the way, you can either review the Graduate School's policies or contact the English Department's Coordinator of Graduate Studies — Suzie Park (

Step One. Admission to the Graduate School requires:

  • Completing an online application.
  • Submitting a copy of your official transcripts.
  • A $30 application fee.

Step Two. Admission to the English MA Program requires:

  • A Personal Statement (no more than 1000 words) that explains your reasons for undertaking graduate study, your academic preparation, your interests and goals.
  • A Résumé/CV.
  • A Writing Sample (no more than 20 pages in length): Submit a writing sample that shows us your ability to think and write critically. Essays may address a subject related to English studies or any other academic/professional area in which you have research and writing experience. Students interested in the Creative Writing concentration are strongly encouraged to submit a creative writing sample in addition.
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation: The MyEIU process will ask you to submit the names and email addresses of two recommenders and will automatically contact them with instructions for how to submit their recommendation letter to MyEIU. It's a good idea to contact your recommenders ahead of time and let them know they should expect this email.

MyEIU will let you know when your admission file is completed. Once it is complete, the Graduate School and English Department will review your material and be in contact with you very soon.

Applying for a Graduate Assistantship

As you complete the MyEIU application process, you will be asked if you want to be considered for a graduate assistantship. There are no additional requirements to complete; you are just notifying us of your intent, and you material will be further reviewed by the English Department's Graduate Studies Committee for further review.

Please note: Awarding graduate assistantships is a separate review process from being admitted to the department.

While you may enroll in the graduate program at any time throughout the year, graduate assistantships are usually awarded in early March for the next academic year.

If you wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship for academic year 2017–18, you must have your application file completed by February 17, 2017.

What is a Graduate Assistantship in the English Department?

Graduate assistantships available through the English Department are awarded on a competitive basis. As a graduate assistant, your tuition (though not fees) will be waived and you will receive a monthly stipend. (As of September 2016, stipends were $890 per month.) In addition, summer tuition is also waived for graduate assistants in case you wish to continue your studies through the summer term.

In addition to financial aid, graduate assistantships provide valuable training and experience. Assistants tutor in the University’s Writing Center, assist with Writing across the Curriculum, and/or serve as editorial or research assistants. Assistants who complete the required sequence of training in composition pedagogy may apply to teach first-year writing courses.

You can also find general information about graduate assistantships at Eastern on the Graduate School's website.
