Internships

Process for Communication Studies, Health Communication, and Public Relations Majors

If you plan to complete an internship for credit and you are a Communication Studies, Health Communication, or Public Relations major, you must follow the process detailed below in order to be enrolled in your internship class for credit.

Taking an internship for credit means that you are taking an actual class (CMN 4275) and completing the components of that class at the same time you are completing the internship itself.

Follow the steps below to be enrolled in CMN 4275 and receive credit for the internship you are completing:

  1. It is the responsibility of the student to identify and secure his/her internship. After you have arranged an internship, you need to complete the following:
  2. Submit the Internship Application: https://www.eiu.edu/commstudies/machform/view.php?id=3
  3. After your application has been approved by the Internship Coordinator, you will receive the Internship Contract.  Fill out the contract and submit it electronically.  You will be notified through your EIU email when you have been registered for internship hours.
  4. Always check your schedule on PAWS before the academic term begins to make sure you are registered for the correct courses and the correct number of hours.

Please note: CMN 4275 is an academic course.  This means that tuition is charged for each credit hour for which you are enrolled.  For further information on tuition, see the Financial Aid website, https://www.eiu.edu/finaid/cost.php.

While completing an internship, you should keep a daily log. Each week, submit your log to the dropbox in Desire2Learn. You are encouraged to keep a portfolio of work samples to supplement the logs. The exact nature of the portfolio will depend on the nature of the internship.

At the end of the internship, you are required to write a final report and submit it to the dropbox in Desire2Learn. A final evaluation form will be sent to your supervisor.  Your grade will be based upon this evaluation, the content of your logs and the final report.
