Student Applications and Forms

The College of Sciences has several opportunities that are available to students. Please read each of these carefully for their specific rules and eligibility requirements. Click on the individual scholarships, awards, or grants to apply or to find out more information.

Scholarships

Students can apply on the EIU Academic Works website. The deadline for all COS scholarships is March 15, 2018. Awards are announced in the spring and paid out to recipients in Fall 2018.

Awards

Graduate Student Investigator Award - GSI

The Graduate Student Investigator Award (GSI) program was developed by the Dean of the College of Sciences to support graduate research and to provide a forum for the presentation of superior graduate student research.

The faculty reference form is emailed to the faculty member when the student submits their own application. Both the student and faculty forms must be submitted for a complete application.

Scholars in Undergraduate Research at Eastern Award - SURE

The SURE program fosters undergraduate research participation in COS. Undergraduate involvement in research with mentoring professors is a rewarding experience for students. The goal of the SURE program is to facilitate research activities and provide a forum for the presentation of undergraduate research.

The SURE awards are given to undergraduate students in their junior or senior years. Students are encouraged to present their research in a professional setting (a local or state conference, student association/club meeting or classes).

The faculty reference form is emailed to the faculty member when the student submits their own application. Both the student and faculty forms must be submitted for a complete application.

Social Science Writing Award

Applications are submitted to the chairs of listed departments.

The Departments of Economics, Geology-Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology-Anthropology of Eastern Illinois University invite students to participate in the Annual Social Science Writing Awards competition. Regardless of major, undergraduate students who write research papers as a regular assignment in all social science courses may submit them for recognition.

The Selection Committee requires double-spaced, typed papers that consistently follow a recognized style of documentation and prefers papers between eight and thirty pages. Winning papers will have the following qualities:

  • Precise and Effective Use of Language
  • Well-defined and Logically Developed Thesis
  • Creative Topic Development
  • Relevant, Superior Documentation
  • Strong Command of the Subject – Including Current Points of View
  • Cogent Synthesis and Conclusions

The contest guidelines are as follows:

  • Undergraduates (or instructor with the consent of the student) may submit graded papers to one of the chairpersons of the Departments of Economics, Geology-Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology-Anthropology.
  • Include two cover sheets: one with the student’s name, paper title, course number, and semester taken for which the paper was originally written; the second with the paper title only.
  • Papers may be submitted to Department Chairs any time during the year, but must be submitted by the posted due date.
  • Chairpersons will submit no more than three papers to the Dean of the College of Sciences by the due date. The Dean of the College of Sciences presides over the Selection Committee, which is composed of a faculty member from each of the participating departments.
  • Applications are due TBD.

COS Student Advisory Board Student Assistance Award

Students must apply for this award on the EIU Academic Works website.

Financial need is a consideration for this award. The recipient may be eligible to apply for and receive the award again provided she/he continues to meet the criteria stated.

  • Must be facing or have overcome some sort of hardship that has impacted the student's college career.
  • Full-time sophomore or higher majoring in a COS academic program.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Letter of recommendation from EIU faculty member.
  • Applications due TBD.
  • 2018 Winner: Lindy Dokken - Psychology

COS Spring Commencement Speaker Competition 

A student speaker representing the College of Sciences will be featured during the Spring 2018 ceremony on Saturday, May 5, 2018.

To be eligible for the competition, students must submit an essay about the theme listed below, provide evidence from the degree audit that they will meet the requirements for graduation in the commencement ceremony they seek to represent, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher for courses completed at EIU at the time that they submit their materials for consideration.

The Essay Theme for this year is: Explain how the new knowledge that you gained through research, creative exploration or community-based learning at Eastern Illinois University will shape your life and continue to guide your future.

Grants

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Student Travel Grant

Applications are submitted to the chair of your department for approval before being forwarded to the College of Sciences Dean's Office.

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Travel Grants were established to provide travel support for College of Science majors who have papers or creative works accepted for presentation at regional, state, national, or international conferences during Fall, Spring, or Summer terms. These funds may be used for travel related to the student's research. Grants will be made based on the quality of the application and availability of funds. A contribution from the candidate's department is encouraged.

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Summer Research Grants are available to help support students conducting research with faculty members during the Summer semester.
