EIU Department of Educational Leadership

On campus Cohort Information

The Department of Educational Leadership offers courses for both the master and specialist degree on campus each fall, spring, and summer semester.  


Classes are offered both weekday evenings from 5–10pm and in a weekend format of Friday 5-10pm and Saturday 8am-4pm.

Tuition waivers can be used for on campus courses.  For questions regarding waivers, please contact the Office of the Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies at 217-581-2524.

Master of Science in Education Degree —Educational Leadership Program (MSED)


This program is designed to meet the needs of those educators interested in entry leadership positions in their schools:  grade level leader, team leader, department chair, curriculum director/coordinator, athletic director, dean of students, etc.  The Master of Science in Education in Educational Leadership Degree will be composed of 11 courses, or 33 hours of graduate level work.  The required coursework is as follows:

     EDF 5500 Curriculum Development (3 sem hrs)

     EDF 5510 Social Foundations of Education (3 sem hrs)

     EDP 5300 Psychological Foundations for Educational Practice (3 sem hrs)

     ELE 5520 Supporting High Quality Instruction (3 sem hrs)

     SPE 5675 Students with Exceptionalities (3 sem hrs)

      EDL 5410 School Law (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 5420 Managing Educational Resources (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 5600 Introduction to Organization and Administration (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 5700 Enhancing Effective Practice (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 5870 Personnel Administration (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 5900 Research in Education (3 sem hrs)

* A minimum of 33 semester hours is required for the degree.  All hours included in a student's plan of study MUST be within a 6-year time limit preceding receipt of the degree.  At least 21 hours must be from EIU.  


Principal Preparation/Endorsement Program

Is designed for those educators wanting to pursue leadership roles as an assistant principal or principal.  Individuals wanting to continue to complete coursework to obtain their Principal Endorsement may apply to the Principal Preparation Program after successful completion of 18 semester hours of MSED coursework (see above for coursework.)  The Principal Endorsement Program requires, in addition to the master's program, successful completion of an additional nine (9) semester hours of coursework over the course of a year for a total of 42 semester hours.  Additional coursework includes:


     EDL 5630 The Principalship (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 5891 Practicum in Educational Leadership (Summer) (2 sem hrs)

     EDL 5892 Practicum in Educational Leadership (Fall) (2 sem hrs)

     EDL 5893 Practicum in Educational Leadership (Spring) (2 sem hrs)

Specialist Degree in Educational Administration (Ed.S.)

This program provides the necessary coursework for graduates to secure the Illinois State Board of Education Certification to be a Superintendent of Schools.  In addition to successful completion of the program, two years of full-time administrative experience and successful completion of the Illinois Superintendent Certification Test are required for certification. This degree requires a minimum of 33 semester hours above the Master's Degree.  The required coursework is as follows:

     EDL 6600 Organizational Development in Educational Administration (4 sem hrs)

     EDL 6650 Superintendent of Schools (4 sem hrs)

     EDL 6700 Planning and Evaluation of Instructional Programs (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 6800 Current Issues in Educational Administration (4 sem hrs)

     EDL 6810 School Operations and the Law Seminar (2 sem hrs)

     EDL 6850 School Plant Planning (2 sem hrs)

     EDL 6860 School Finance (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 6870 Collective Bargaining (3 sem hrs)

     EDL 6910 Field Experience in Educational Administration (4 sem hrs)

All hours included in a student's plan of study MUST be within a 6-year time limit preceding receipt of the degree.
