The demand for Computer and Information Technology (CIT) professionals remains robust in the United States. Nationwide, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projected a 13% growth from 2014 to 2024 for all fields related to Computer and Information Technology. In Illinois, the Illinois Department of Employment Security projected a 17% growth in the profession from 2012-2022. Targeted jobs by the program are usually not affected by software or service outsourcing. Every company needs its own CIT support.

The Computer and Information Technology (CIT) program prepares technical professionals for applications of computer and information technology. Those professionals usually work in an Information Technology (IT) or Information Systems (IS) department in organizations ranging from manufacturing, service, and healthcare to education and government. Typical job titles include network system engineer, administrator or architect; information security analyst; system administrator or programmer; database administrator; web designer or developer; computer programmers; software developer; mobile app developer; computer user support specialist; and so on.

Students majoring in Computer and Information Technology (CIT) have the opportunity to achieve a minor in Management Information System (MIS) offered by the School of Business, or a minor in Media Technology to develop a specialization in such applications as digital video, graphics, gaming and animation.
