Presidential Scholars Award
Eastern offers strong entering freshman students a variety of scholarships. Only one, the Presidential Scholars Award, is directly administered by the Honors College.
Minimum eligibility criteria for the Presidential Scholars Award (PSA) are:
Composite ACT score of 30 (or SAT equivalent score of 1980) and either an unweighted high school GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) or ranking in the top 90th percentile of the graduating class.
Composite ACT score of 28 (or SAT equivalent score of 1860) and either an unweighted high school GPA of 3.75 (on a 4.00 scale) or a ranking in the top 95th percentile of the graduating class.
In evaluating applications we consider high school transcripts, extracurricular and volunteer activities, personal essays, and a recommendation from a high school teacher or administrator. All applications are reviewed by the Honors Council (a faculty and student body).
The Presidential Scholars Award is $11,000 per year for four years. This is approximately the amount for tuition and fees for a full-time student taking 15 semester hours (click here for costs). The award is not limited to tuition however. Each freshman honors class will include approximately twenty (20) Presidential Scholars. This particular scholarship can't be combined with the Commitment to Excellence Award or Honors Award.
To retain their award, Presidential Scholars are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.40, and to remain in good academic and judicial standing with Eastern Illinois University, the University Honors Program, and the Presidential Scholars Program.
Applications are fully electronic with part completed online and part uploaded. Do remember to have a high school teacher or administrator who knows you well send a letter of recommendation to us (The Honors College, Eastern Illinois University - Pemberton Hall South, Charleston, IL 61920 ).
Applications for the Presidential Scholars Award are accepted from the beginning of the fall semester until January 10, 2014 at 4 PM.
All materials must be received on, or before, January 10, 2014. Only fully completed applications are considered.
Faxed references are acceptable - the fax number is (217) 581-7222. Faculty may also email their recommendations to firstname.lastname@example.org with "Presidential Scholars Award Letter of Recommendation" in the subject line.
Students who have applied for the Presidential Scholars Award, but are not selected will automatically be considered for an Honors Award, a $3000 scholarship renewable for four years. This scholarship would typically be combined with a Commitment to Excellence award.
