For exceptionally strong incoming freshman students the Honors College offers three different awards.
The Pemberton Presidential Scholarship
The Pemberton Presidential Scholars Award covers on-campus room and board (approximately ($8,900 per year) and tuition and fees (up to $11,000 per year) for four years. Each freshman Honors College class will include approximately five Pemberton Presidential Scholars. This particular scholarship can't be combined with the Commitment to Excellence Award that students would otherwise receive from EIU.
The eligibility requirements for the Pemberton Presidential award are a composite 31 ACT (or a new SAT score of 1420) and a 3.75 GPA (unweighted, cumulative on a 4-point scale).
The Presidential Scholarship
The Presidential Scholars Award is $11,000 per year for four years, which is approximately the amount for tuition and fees for a full-time student taking 15 semester hours (click here for costs). The award is not limited to tuition costs however. Each freshman Honors College class will include approximately fifteen Presidential Scholars. This particular scholarship can't be combined with the Commitment to Excellence Award or Honors Award. Students may apply for this scholarship if they have...
a composite ACT score of 30 (or SAT equivalent score of 1390) and either an unweighted high school GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) or ranking in the top 90th percentile of the graduating class.
a composite ACT score of 28 (or SAT equivalent score of 1310) and either an unweighted high school GPA of 3.75 (on a 4.00 scale) or a ranking in the top 95th percentile of the graduating class.
Students who have applied for the Presidential Scholars Award but are not selected may be considered for an Honors Award, a $3000 scholarship renewable for four years. This scholarship will be combined with a Commitment to Excellence award. Depending on your academic scores, the Commitment to Excellence award would be either $3500 or $4500 per year, meaning that your minimum scholarship from these sources would be either $6500 or $7500 per year for four years. Note, while non-presidential eligible students can also apply for an honors award, anyone who has applied for the presidential scholarship will also be considered.
Requirements to Retain Awards
To retain their awards, all Honors scholarship recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.40, and to remain in good academic and judicial standing with Eastern Illinois University, the University Honors Program, and the Presidential Scholars Program.
How to Apply
To be considered for any of these three awards you must complete the application below. Applications are fully electronic with part completed online and part uploaded.

In evaluating applications we consider high school transcripts, extracurricular and volunteer activities, personal essays, and a recommendation from a high school teacher or administrator. We are particularly looking for leadership potential, ambition to make the most of college, and intellectual maturity. For the Pemberton Presidential Scholarship, the financial need of academically eligible students may also be considered. All applications are reviewed by the Honors Council (a faculty and student body).
Applications for the Presidential Scholars Award are accepted from the beginning of the fall semester until Monday January 16, 2017 at 4 PM. (note - this deadline has been extended)
All materials must be received on, or before, January 16, 2017. Only fully completed applications are considered.
