Political Science Study plans

We offer multiple options for students interested in studying government and politics at EIU. Click on the links below for checklists, study plans, and program details.

Our majors fit well with many other majors and minors; many students pursue double majors and 1-2 minors. 

The checklists linked below apply to the Fall 2023 catalog; be sure to check with your adviser and your degree audit to confirm requirements.

Political Science Major

The Political Science major is ideal for students with broad interests in American politics, international relations, comparative politics, political theory, and law. Students are prepared for a wide range of government and corporate careers, including law school and graduate school.

Political Science/Civic & Nonprofit Leadership Option

The Civic and Nonprofit Leadership option emphasizes US public administration, public policy, and nonprofits. Students gain valuable technical skills, such as public budgeting and Geographic Information Systems, and are well-prepared for public sector, nonprofit, and urban planning careers.

Political Science/International Studies Option

The International Studies option emphasizes international relations and comparative politics, including interdisciplinary courses and a second language. This option provides a well-rounded degree to prepare students for careers in global politics, diplomacy, development, and advocacy.

Political Science Honors

Qualified students can graduate with departmental honors by writing an honors thesis, mentored by a faculty member, and completing a graduate seminar in Political Science.

Minors in Political Science

Accelerated Graduate Program

Qualified students may apply to take graduate classes beginning in their junior year, double-counting up to 9 credits, and allowing students to earn a B.A. and M.A. in Political Science in about 5 years.

Joint B.A./J.D. with Northern Illinois University

Qualified students may enroll in a program that allowing them to earn both a B.A. in Political Science from EIU and a law degree from Northern Illinois University in 6 years, instead of the customary 7 years.
