Annual Latino Heritage Celebration Underway at EIU

Tickets will go on sale Monday, Sept. 22, for the 2003 Latino Heritage Banquet, set to take place Saturday, Oct. 4, on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

This year's event, which will begin with a cocktail "hour" at 6:30 p.m., will be followed by dinner at 7 in the Grand Ballroom of the University Union. Featured entertainment will include performances by the Luna Negra Dance Theater and Latin dancing.

Tickets for the banquet, which takes place annually as part of the university's Latino Heritage Celebration, cost $6 for EIU students and $12 for non-EIU students. They are available through Eastern's ticket box office, located on the second floor of the west side of the University Union. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and phone orders [(217) 581-5122] will be allowed. Cash, check, Visa and MasterCard will be accepted.

Eastern's Latino Heritage Celebration also will feature lectures, films, dance lessons and more throughout the month of September and into October. Those events (most of which are free and open to the public) are as follows:

  • "The Best of Two Worlds: Being Latino in the U.S.A.," a panel discussion with first-, second- and third-generation Latin-Americans, 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, Newman Catholic Center, 500 Roosevelt Ave.
  • "Latin American Foods and Culture," presented by Kristin Routt, EIU Department of Foreign Languages, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, Coleman Hall Auditorium. *
  • "Projects of Technological Transference from Europe to Latin America: The Nordenflicht Mission in the 18th Century," lecture presented by Carlos Contreras, professor of colonial Latin American history in El Colegio de Mexico, Mexico, and Universidad Catolica, Lima, Peru, 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, Effingham Room, University Union.
  • Flamenco Dance Lessons, given by Lilian Barria, 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, Student Rec Center Dance Studio, Lantz Building.
  • Slam Poet La Bruja Caridad De La Luz, a.k.a. La Bruja, 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, Seventh Street Underground, University Union.
  • Salsa Dance, 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, Seventh Street Underground, University Union.
  • "Women on Top" (movie), 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, Lumpkin Auditorium.
  • "A Visit to Mexico During Spring Break," presented by Carlos Amaya, EIU Department of Foreign Languages, 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, Booth Library Conference Room (room 4440).
  • "The Life of Frida Kahlo," a biography presented by Kristin Routt, EIU Department of Foreign Languages, 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, Coleman Hall Auditorium.
  • "Frida Kahlo" (movie), 5 and 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, Buzzard Auditorium.
