Methven to Assume Role as Chair of EIU's Biological Sciences Department

Andy MethvenAndrew S. Methven of Charleston will assume the role of acting chair of Eastern Illinois University 's Department of Biological Sciences, effective Jan. 1, 2004 , and then take on the role of chair, beginning July 1.

He will replace Kipp Kruse, who plans on taking an administrative leave during the first six months of the year and then plans to return to full-time teaching.

Methven, who arrived on Eastern's campus in August 1987, has served as the department's associate chair for the past five-and-a-half years.

"I am delighted that Dr. Andrew Methven will assume department chair responsibilities for the Department of Biological Sciences and join the College of Sciences ' administrative team," said Dean Mary Anne Hanner. "Dr. Methven brings many key experiences to this position, including associate chair, member and chair of the Council on Academic Affairs, faculty member, student advisor and mentor, and researcher. These experiences will facilitate his success as chair."

Methven came to Eastern after having earned his doctorate from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville . He received his master's degree (ecology and systematics) from San Francisco State University and his bachelor's degree (botany) from the University of California , Davis .

While at Eastern, Methven has received four faculty excellence awards and has served as an adjunct professor of plant biology at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale while being actively involved in many leadership positions in professional organizations (i.e., Mycological Society of America, Council on Undergraduate Research, Illinois State Academy of Sciences).

He is a founding member of the Campus Advising Network and has participated in numerous university service activities, including the Council on Academic Affairs, the Council on Graduate Studies and the Council for Faculty Research.

Methven and his wife, Cheryl Noll, are the parents of three children: Josh, Jeremiah and Elenor Methven. He is the son of Emerson and Saralu Methven of Citrus Heights , Calif.
