(Charleston, IL) – Eastern Illinois University is welcoming hundreds of music educators, students and performers from across the country as the Smith Walbridge Clinics return to campus for another summer, continuing a decades-long partnership that reflects the University's commitment to expanding educational opportunities and supporting the next generation of leaders across Illinois.
Hosted annually at EIU, the Smith Walbridge Clinics have become one of the nation's premier educational experiences for high school and collegiate marching band, drum major, color guard and music educators. Each summer, participants travel from across the United States to EIU’s Charleston, Illinois-based campus to learn from nationally recognized instructors, refine their skills and collaborate with peers who share a passion for music education, leadership and performance.
This year's clinics are underway and will continue throughout July with specialized instructional sessions including:
For decades, Eastern has served as the home of the Smith Walbridge Clinics, providing an affordable, accessible environment where participants can develop technical skills, leadership abilities and professional connections. The partnership reflects EIU's broader mission of making high-quality educational experiences available to learners from a wide range of backgrounds, both within and beyond the traditional classroom.
"Providing access to educational opportunities has always been central to Eastern Illinois University's mission," said EIU Interim Executive Director of Housing & Dining Jeremy Alexander. "Our partnership with Smith Walbridge demonstrates how the University continues to serve learners of all ages by creating meaningful experiences that foster leadership, creativity and lifelong learning."
The clinics also underscore EIU's longstanding commitment to supporting education throughout Illinois and reinforce the University’s furtherance of A Thriving Illinois—the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s strategic plan for higher education in the State. As Illinois and the Midwestern region continue to develop future educators, artists, administrators and community leaders, Eastern remains dedicated to providing programs and partnerships that strengthen Illinois schools and communities while helping emerging leaders build the knowledge and skills needed for success.
That commitment extends beyond degree programs to educational outreach initiatives that connect the university with K-12 students, teachers, professionals and organizations across the region. By hosting programs such as the Smith Walbridge Clinics, Eastern creates opportunities for participants to gain hands-on instruction, mentorship and collaborative experiences in an affordable campus setting.
The annual clinics represent one example of Eastern Illinois University's ongoing investment in comprehensive educational excellence, community engagement and workforce development. Through partnerships that promote learning, leadership and professional growth, EIU continues to fulfill its mission of serving the people of Illinois while preparing students, educators and professionals to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields.
This summer, EIU already has hosted or will soon welcome a broad slate of summer programs that includes state championship athletic events, youth and high school sports camps, academic enrichment and college-access initiatives, leadership development programs, music and arts camps, professional conferences, aviation training, educator workshops, and residential experiences for students and community organizations from across Illinois and beyond.
