EIU’s fall commencement ceremonies set for Saturday, Dec.15

Eastern Illinois University will host its fall 2018 commencement celebration in two ceremonies in Lantz Arena on Saturday, December 15.

Ceremonies will take place at 10 a.m. for students graduating from the College of Health and Human Services and the Lumpkin College of Business and Technology, and at 1 p.m. for students graduating from the College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students enrolled in the Graduate School will march with their respective colleges.

EIU president Dr. David M. Glassman will preside, with music provided by the EIU Wind Symphony.

EIU alumnus and Illinois Senator Dale Righter will deliver the charge to the class for both ceremonies. Sen. Righter has served Illinois Senate District 55 since 2003, after having served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1997-2003. Righter completed his undergraduate studies at EIU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1988 before going on to receive his law degree from St. Louis University School of Law in 1991. Righter started his career as an Associate Attorney at Reed, Armstrong, Coffey, Goldbert & Mudge P.C. from 1991-92. He was then a Felony Drug Crimes Prosecutor in the State’s Attorney’s Appellate Prosecutor’s Office from 1992-97. In the Senate, Righter currently serves as party spokesman for the Appropriations I Committee, the Executive Committee and the Executive Appointments Committee. Additional committee assignments include Human Services, Appropriations II, Veterans Affairs and Assignments. He also serves on the Legislative Audit Commission. In addition to his duties in the General Assembly, Righter has coached cross country and track on a volunteer basis for the past 10 years.

Student speakers will be Victoria McDonald, an Educational Administration graduate degree candidate from Shelbyville, IL, who will represent the Graduate School during the 10 a.m. ceremony, and Victoria Turner of Glendale Heights, IL, who will represent the School of Extended Learning at the 1 p.m. ceremony.
