The Human Performance Laboratory was established by Dr. M. T. Woodall in 1966 to support students and faculty in their teaching, learning and research endeavors in exercise science. The space is divided into areas for the assessment of cardiopulmonary and metabolic function, body composition, physical fitness and neuromuscular function. There is also a reference area available for graduate students and a quiet testing area for sport and exercise psychology. Equipment available for use in the Human Performance Laboratory includes: Cosmed Quark® CPET Metabolic Measurement Cart with integrated 12-lead ECG and computerized spirometry, Trackmaster treadmill, SensorMedics 2900 Metabolic Measurement Cart, Case 8000 12-lead ECG system, Quinton Treadmill, computer controlled bicycle ergometer, Monarch bicycle ergometers, lactate analyzer, heart rate monitors, portable spirometer, Nonin pulse oximeter, BodPod™ whole body plethysmograph, bioelectric impedance analyzers, skinfold calipers and anthropometers, Actical accelerometer, Vertimax trainer, force plate, jump mat, electromyography, vibration plate and handgrip dynamometers.

The Assessment, Testing and Prescription (ATP) Lab located at 1011 Lantz Building gives both graduate and undergraduate students the ability to utilize hands on learning skills through comprehensive physical fitness assessments for all EIU faculty, staff and students. Exercise Science students gain experience in conducting these assessments and prescribing exercise programs to patrons based on the results of the fitness tests. Students learn to both explain testing protocols and interpret results of various fitness assessments in helping clients reach their goals. The ATP Lab is free and has many open hours available to set up a fitness assessment.
