EIU Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Welcome to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs!

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) facilitates applications, negotiations, and procurement of grant funding for activities that are consistent with the mission and role of the University. Such activities include research, creative activity, acquisition of equipment, construction and improvement of facilities, and public service. The office also administers state-appropriated funds that the University allocates for research and creative activity. The office works to ensure compliance with university, state, and federal regulations that govern the conduct of research. This compliance oversight includes coordination of both the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). ORSP activities are a joint effort involving faculty members, funding agency personnel, university fiscal authorities, and others.

IRB Position Announcement

The following position is available on the IRB beginning at the start of the fall 2023 semester. The position will be appointed by the L. M. Hamand Dean of the Graduate School to serve a 3-year term:

One Alternate Non-Scientist Member
A non-scientist is a member whose training, background, and occupation would incline them to view research activities outside of any biomedical or behavioral scientific discipline.

Alternate members are encouraged to attend and participate in IRB meetings, but will only contribute to the quorum and be able to vote if they are substituting for a regular member. New IRB members are required to complete an online CITI Program training course developed specifically for IRB members. Individuals wishing to be considered for membership should e-mail a statement of interest to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at

About the IRB:
The EIU Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with assuring the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects participating in research. Therefore, the IRB is required to review all research involving human subjects prior to the commencement of research.

The EIU IRB is currently composed of 10 regular voting members and 2 alternate members, representing each of the colleges at EIU, along with 2 members who are not affiliated with the University.

The IRB generally meets once a month during the academic year for research protocol review, administrative business, or any other issues that need to be addressed by the board. Monthly meeting times are arranged at the beginning of each semester, based on member availability. Summer meetings are only scheduled as needed.

In addition to monthly meetings, IRB members will be called upon to review research protocols throughout the year. Each member, including alternate members, can anticipate conducting up to 4 reviews each semester.
