Four Ways Undergraduate Students Can Take Graduate Courses in English
Undergraduates seeking to take a 5000-level course in English, or to earn graduate
credit for courses at the 4750-4999 level, should consult with their academic adviser.
The four ways this can be done and the required forms for each option are listed below.
- Students who have been admitted to the Accelerated BA/MA (AMA) program may take up
to 9 credits of coursework that can be counted in both the undergraduate and graduate
degree programs. Only students already admitted to the AMA may request this option.
Here is the AMA course request form.
- Undergraduates who are admitted to the Honors Program in English are required to take
one graduate course. If these students are also in the AMA program, they would follow
the same procedures as AMA students (above). Honors students who are not AMA students
would use this form for undergraduate honors students seeking admission to a graduate course.
- Reserve credit: Reserve credit is a different option for students planning to pursue
an MA. When a course is taken for reserve credit, the credit will apply only to the
MA. This is a good option for AMA students who have already taken the maximum number
of credits in shared coursework and want to continue taking graduate coursework. Up
to 9 credits of reserve credit are allowed. Here is the reserve credit request form.
- Finally, seniors who aren't AMA or Honors students and want to take a graduate course
for undergraduate credit can request admission if they have the required GPA. They
use the same form as reserve credit, but check a different box: graduate credit for undergraduates.
