Dr. He joined Eastern Illinois University in 2013 and was promoted to a Full Professor in 2022. He is a four-time recipient of the EIU’s Achievement and Contribution Award in research. Dr. He served as an Associate Editor for RSC Advances from 2016 to 2021 and is a regular reviewer for numerous scientific journals. His research was supported by the National Science Foundation, the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, and Eastern Illinois University President Research Fund and Creativity. Research

The first research theme in our lab is near-infrared (NIR) emitting lanthanide materials for medical and optical applications. We use a molecular engineering approach to develop novel lanthanide complexes that can be sensitized effectively under the excitation of red light. Specifically, we are using porphyrin and BODIPY dyes as building blocks to make stable and functionalized lanthanide complexes. As demonstrated in the following graph, attaching iodinated BODIPY moieties to a phenanthroline ligand and expanding π-conjugation of porphyrin have great potential to address the aforementioned problems. The second theme in our lab is to design, synthesize and evaluate photoredox catalysts for efficient chemical conversion. In particular, we try to develop "two-in-one" catalysts, in which organic chromophores are integrated into a conventional catalyst to realize the intramolecular SET or EnT process as shown in the following figure. We found that the BODIPY-functionalized palladium (II) complex catalyzed Sonogashira C-C cross-coupling reactions efficiently. The third theme in our group is to study broadband light-harvesting materials for cost-effective solar energy utilization. We found that 8-hydroxyquinoline is an excellent anchoring group in dye-sensitized solar cells as shown in the following graph.
