EIU Master of Science in Chemistry

Research in Chemistry

Associate Professor Hongshan He

The Department of Chemistry is proud of its active research program, involving both undergraduates (including chemistry and non-chemistry majors) and master's degree candidates. Virtually all faculty in the Department are involved in exciting, productive projects that cover a wide variety of disciplines within the chemical sciences (see the following link for faculty research interests). These research efforts are supported by a wide array of state-of-the-art instrumentation (see the following link for a list of departmental instrumentation). A majority of the research groups are funded by external sources, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Petroleum Research Fund (PRF, administered by the American Chemical Society), the Research Corporation, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and others.

Research in the Chemistry Department is currently supported by extramural grants which total more than a half million dollars. During the academic year, an average of 25 students are engaged in research; Of those who graduate with a B.S. in Chemistry, about 70% have been involved in undergraduate research. Of course, a major goal of research is the generation of publishable knowledge; from 2000 through the present time, around 90 publications authored by chemistry faculty have appeared (or have been accepted and will appear) in international, peer-reviewed journals.

Chemistry Department also supports summer research opportunities for undergraduate students. Each student works closely with the faculty in externally and/or internally funded projects in the summer. Many of these opportunities provides students stipends, assistance with housing and travel.
