EIU Master of Science in Chemistry

Non-Thesis Master of Science Chemsitry  Degree with Chemistry or Biochemistry Options

This track does not involve intensive research work on a project, and replaces the research credits with additional coursework.  A semester or two of research can be taken if desired but is not required, and a thesis does not have to be written / defended.  This program will most likely take 2 years.

.Chemistry:  

  • 6 core chemistry graduate courses (CHM 5001, 5003, 5210, 5280, 5360, and 5420)
  • 6 credit hours at the 5000 level from Chemistry, Biochemistry, and/or another department. Selected courses must be approved by the graduate coordinator.
  • 12 credit hours which can be from graduate courses from either the Chemistry Dept. or from other Depts (pending approval from the Graduate Coordinator). Click here for detailed course list.
  • In CHM 5001 you present a 40-minute literature based seminar

 Biochemistry: 

  • 2 required core courses (CHM 5009, and 5011)
  • 6 credit hours from CHM 5210, 5280, an d/or 5420
  • 4 credit hours from CHM 5101, 5106, 5360
  • 18 credit hours which can be from graduate courses from either the Chemistry Dept. or from other Depts (pending approval from the Graduate Coordinator). Click here for detailed course list.

Non-thesis MS track students are awarded graduate assistantships if available.
