The graduate curriculum encompasses comprehensive content knowledge and promotes the use of critical thinking and problem solving to cultivate teacher-researchers who are empowered to serve as leaders in the profession. Faculty members challenge students to bridge the gap between theory and practice as they develop the skills required for ethical and effective collaboration and communication within the local school community and a culturally diverse, technologically advanced global environment.
Our program has been ranked as one of the top programs for educators in the state. We strive to advance the scholarly preparation of practicing teachers by providing quality instruction that exemplifies the best teaching practices for children from birth through high school - recognizing multiple pathways to learning. The Department is committed to enhancing the academic experiences of our graduate students in an effort to fashion educators who function effectively in a culturally diverse, technologically advanced, and global environment.
Our program is proud to have a long legacy of preparing educators in programs inclusive of the core components of integrated learning (intentionality, reflection, problem-solving, collaboration and meta-cognition).
Graduate students within the department have two options for their culminating experience in the Master’s program. As their culminating experience, they can either complete a thesis or an action research project.
Specific courses in reading may be selected that will position students to obtain the Reading Teacher Endorsement in Illinois, including a graduate level practicum. Also addressed are foundations of reading, content area reading, assessment and diagnosis of reading problems, developmental reading methods and remedial reading instruction. This program addresses foundational issues to education, as well as focusing on designing and implementing high quality instruction in content areas. Through in depth study of curriculum development, professional learning communities, technology, research and other areas, program candidates gain knowledge and confidence to be curricular leaders in their schools
Dr. Pearson firmly believes that her life’s vision and purpose to serve others, be they students or faculty, is indicative of the principles and values that have been instilled in her as a child. She is reminded of Albert Einstein’s famous quote that “Only a life lived in the service of others is worth living.”
Dr. Bickford's research focuses on Social studies/history education methodology and assessment, Elementary and middle level students' historical thinking, history literacy, and historical argumentation, Historical (mis)representations within children's literature, and Adolescents' social, emotional, and behavioral development
