Welcome to Charleston!
Eastern Illinois University is located in Charleston, Illinois, a friendly college town in the heart of east-central Illinois.
EIU is within easy driving distance of Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis, but far enough from home to give students the independence and full campus experience they’re looking for.
Charleston is just the right size for college life. Students get the close-knit feel of a true campus community, with local restaurants, parks, shops and events nearby when they want to get out and explore.
Parking
General Visitor Parking
Daily visits, self-guided tours and individual appointments
When you arrive in Charleston, look for Old Main, EIU’s castle landmark, on Lincoln Avenue. For most admissions visits, you’ll park near Old Main and check in at the Office of Admissions.
If you need to pick up a parking permit, turn south onto Seventh Street from Lincoln Avenue and enter the circle drive on the east side of Old Main. Parking permits are available inside the Office of Admissions.
If you already have your permit or do not need one, continue to the Visitor Lot on the west side of Seventh Street.
Admissions Event Parking
Open House, Admitted Student Day and other large admissions events
For larger admissions events, parking may be available in several areas of campus, including the Visitor Lot, lots near the Doudna Fine Arts Center and the J Lot near Lantz Complex.
After you register for an admissions event, watch your email for event-specific parking instructions. We’ll let you know where to park, where to check in and anything else you need before you arrive.

Charleston tourism info
Have some time to spare? You’ll find that getting around Charleston is convenient and easy. We have everything from coffee shops to trails and hiking. Our campus and community work together to make the most out of our beautiful city.
I chose EIU because it reminded me a lot of home. Even though Charleston is a small town, the community makes sure all of its members are taken care of. EIU became my second home because it felt like home.
