Exercise Science
Students in our Exercise Science concentration can further focus their studies by choosing between our clinical and fitness options. The clinical option is designed to prepare students for careers in scientifically based exercise programs with an emphasis on cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness. The fitness option prepares students for careers in personal training and conditioning. Courses prepare students for certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Both options focus on scholarship through critical evaluation of related research and a knowledge of professional standards. The Exercise Science program provides meaningful hands-on experience, as students spend a significant amount of time working with staff and participants in two ongoing year-round community adult exercise initiatives: the EIU Adult Fitness Program and the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Assistantships are available within the KSS Department Adult Fitness Program, the EIU Student Recreation Center, and local cardiac rehabilitation programs.
