Textbook Rental Service

Textbook Rental service Procedures

Our location at 975 Edgar Drive provides EIU students with an easy, self-service method of picking up their textbooks for the semester. Reading these instructions will give you a head start for when you arrive at the facility.

Before You Come to Textbook Rental Service

To help expedite your textbook pickup experience, you need to bring your Panther Card or know your E-number and we recommend you print your textbook information prior to your visit to the Textbook Rental Service. This information is available online at PAWS closer to when the semester begins.  PAWS will only show one semester's textbook information at at a time, so if we have not ended the previous semester, then the upcoming semester textbook information will not appear.

Kiosk Procedure for Textbook Pickup

Plastic bags are available to help you carry textbooks. Staff members will be on hand to assist the process if necessary.

    • If you have printed your textbook list from PAWS, you may proceed to the textbook storage area.  Begin picking up your textbooks, which are arranged numerically by textbook reference number. All textbooks being issued for the current semester are identified by a large blue tag, which features the reference number and an arrow points to the shelf below where that specific textbook is stored.
    • If not, proceed to one of two printer kiosks to obtain your list via the following process:
    • Hit Check-out on the screen then swipe your Panther Card and hit "Print" on the print box when it comes up OR hit show keypad to enter your E-number on the touchscreen keypad, hit "Print" on the keypad, then hit "Print" again on the print box when it comes up.
    • Your textbook list will print. This list is in numerical order by textbook reference number. It also lists the title, author, ISBN number, row number they are located in, and availability status of each textbook. Take this list to the textbook storage area and begin picking up your textbooks.
    • Once you have gathered the textbooks on your list, proceed to the check-out/check-in counter.
Textbook Check-Out Procedure
  • Step up to the first available station at the check-out/check-in counter. There are a total of eight stations.
  • Hit "Start" on the touch screen.
  • Swipe your Panther Card OR enter your E-number (including the E) on the touch screen keypad.
  • Hit "Checkout" on the touch screen.
  • Place your textbooks on the reader. For best results, place only a few at a time or you can make two stacks on the reader.
  • As the textbooks are being checked out, the textbook information will appear on the screen. At the top right of the screen, you can see the number of textbooks that have been successfully checked out.
  • Once the information turns green for all textbooks, hit "Continue" on the touch screen. A receipt will print. Take your receipt, collect all personal belongings and proceed through the security gates to exit Textbook Rental Service.
  • Once you have successfully checked out your textbooks, you can verify them on PAWS at anytime during the semester.
  • Remember to protect your textbooks at all times. We recommend a waterproof book bag/backpack or another type of protective method for transporting your textbooks at all times.  Keep them away from food, drink, and all other potentially damaging situations, including protecting your textbooks from all weather-related conditions.  Students will be required to pay full list price, plus tax, for any textbooks that have been lost, written in, highlighted or underline, have any visible signs of liquid damage of any time, have been subjected to unusual wear, or have RFID tags that have been removed or damaged in any way.

You can watch the video below for a walkthrough of the textbook check-out process.
