FLG Graduation Requirement

The FLG graduation requirement at EIU is met when a student…

  • Has taken 2 years of a single foreign language in high school (Grade 9-12) with the average grade of C

      or

  • Has completed a second-semester course of a foreign language in college. Passing grade: D.

Admission Policies

Transfer Students

The Department also offers alternate routes to prove that the FLG graduation requirement was met. Students need to meet with the department chair to proceed with the following options.

(1) Students who have acquired second semester language skills but do not have a transcript with the language on it (2 years, average C)

  • Can prove proficiency at 1102 level through a brief exam (free of charge). The exam includes speaking, reading, and writing. A student must prove a proficiency level that is equivalent to the level reached at the end of a second semester course. Pass = D grade level.
  • Procedure:
    • Student meets with chair to request/schedule exam with qualified faculty.
    • Tester informs chair of pass/no pass.
    • If pass: Chair informs registrar/copy to advisor confirming completion of FLG graduation requirement.
    • Registrar enters the requirement as “met” on student's record.

(2) International students whose first language is a language other than English

  • Meet with chair and ask to have their transcript evaluated.
  • Procedure:
    • Chair obtains copy of high school transcript from International Office.
    • Chair confirms that language is listed on transcript (2 years, average C). Example: A student from Korea, showing 2 years of Korean, has met the requirement.
    • Chair informs registrar/copy to advisor confirming completion of FLG graduation requirement.
    • Registrar enters the requirement as “met” on student's record.

 (3) International students whose first language is English and who have studied a foreign language in high school in their home country

  • Meet with chair and ask to have their high school transcript evaluated.
  • Procedure:
  • Chair obtains copy of high school transcript from International Office. If no high school transcript on file at EIU:  Contact your high school and request it to be sent.
  • Transcript needs to show that the foreign language was studied...
    • for a minimum of 2 years with the average grade of C, and
    • at a level that is equivalent to US high school (Grade 9-12).
  • Chair informs registrar/copy to advisor confirming completion of FLG graduation requirement.
  • Registrar enters the requirement as “met” on student's record.

(4) Students with a documented learning disability

  • Meet with chair
  • Procedure:
    • Chair consults with the student and the Office of Student Disability Services.
    • Student chooses courses from substitute courses approved by the Department of Foreign Languages.
    • Substitute courses cannot double count as part of a major, any General Education requirement, or any other requirement associated with graduation.

International students with a documented learning disability in their home country:  Please consult with the Office of Student Disability Services at EIU about documentation requirements and discuss accommodation needs (for example, eligibility to take substitute courses).
