Panther Dining is a division within Student Affairs that operates three residential dining centers, a food court, Panther Catering, a C-Store (Thomas Marketplace) and a coffee shop (Java B&B). We serve the EIU campus community and its guests with high-quality, efficient, and innovative dining options in a variety of settings. We add value to our customer’s on-campus experience by providing welcoming and inclusive dining facilities, high-quality food, and experienced and professional staff who care about those they serve and enjoy the relationships they build.

Our goal is to recruit and build a talented food service team here at EIU. We are seeking individuals that have a passion for food services, enjoy working with people and are looking for a great way to enter the industry. Working in food service offers many opportunities for advancement of your career, but it generally requires little in the way of skills and specialized experience to get started.

For full-time positions, EIU offers an excellent benefits package, including competitive employee insurance premiums as well as flexible options for medical coverage. Vision insurance is included at no cost and dental insurance is available. Eligible employees participate in the State University Retirement System, which offers medical insurance upon retirement. Tuition waivers are offered for continued educational goals, and a generous paid time off package includes at least 11 paid holidays, earned vacation, and sick time.

Culinary Worker III

Multiple positions available!

Primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • General responsibility of preparing food for various university customers in a pleasing, safe and sanitary manner.
  • Responsible for the timely preparation, set-up, clean-up, and service of all food in the University Dining Services.
  • Keep accurate records for the efficiency of the kitchen and to ensure that safety and sanitation regulations are met.
  • Assist in the supervision of student workers in the Food Service Unit.
  • Responsible for supplies and materials needed for food preparation which includes setting up work area, providing order list to unit office, tempering product, and preparing for next day’s meal.

Salary: $16.18 with pay increase to $18.18 after six months and to $18.68 after one year. In addition to this wage, there is a $.55 shift differential added to the above wage when working 2nd shift.

In addition to the salary listed above, this is a full-time position offering excellent health insurance, life insurance, dental and eye coverage and we will pay for your meal during your shift.

Requirements for this position are one year of experience in food service cooking in a commercial setting that is comparable to that described in the lower level of this series.

Qualified candidates will be required to pass a Civil Service Examination.

Food Service Sanitation Laborer

Primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Keep the kitchen and dining area clean and orderly, including the cleaning kitchen equipment
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the kitchen venues, storage areas, freezers, and other dining related areas
  • Inventorying and ordering of food product and supplies
  • Assist with storage of delivered food products
  • Replace beverage syrups when necessary
  • Maintain and clean grease bins, floor mats
  • Clean and operate dish machine, washing pots and pans
  • Follows food safety regulations at all times

    Vacation Leave

    Non-exempt Civil Service employees accrue 12-25 vacation days per year, based on length of service. Employees may accumulate an amount of leave equal to that earned in two service years at the employee's current earnings rate, but upon reaching this accumulation will cease to earn leave except when the accumulation is reduced.

    Sick Leave

    Civil Service employees accrue sick leave without limit at the rate of .0462 hours for each hour, exclusive of overtime, that the employee is in pay status (approximately 12 days per year for full-time status).

  • Tuition and Fee Waivers

    Employee: Civil Service employees are eligible for a tuition waiver at the Eastern Illinois University campus as well as other Illinois state institutions of higher education. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, an employee on a 100 percent time appointment is eligible to receive a waiver for a maximum of 6 credit hours per semester at any other state institution. Part-time employees may also qualify for this benefit but at a reduced number of credit hours.

    Child of Employee: For children of current employees with at least seven years of service, a 50% tuition waiver may be available for up to four years at an Illinois state institution of higher education, depending on the employee’s length of service and appointment status.
